Best expense cards for startups (2026)

Cards with limits the ledger can take. A personal travel card is not a treasury policy.

By Gregory GreensteinUpdated September 20, 2026Affiliate disclosure

Expense cards fail when every hire swipes a personal card and Slack becomes the receipt drawer. The job is: issue a card, set a limit, capture the receipt, and close the month. Rewards are a bonus. This page is the card — not the full expense-management suite and not a points shopping list.

Ramp and Brex are spend platforms that issue cards (approval required). Mercury is debit and spend on a $0 account. Amex is a traditional issuer. Credit-card rewards live on the sibling ranking. Expense software (Expensify, Melio) lives on expense management.

Prices as of September 20, 2026. This is not a credit offer, not a deposit advertisement, and not tax advice. Eligibility is the issuer’s.

01

Ramp

Teams that want unlimited virtual cards, receipt matching, and lockouts before they pay for Plus

8.5 / 10

Public pricing: Free software $0/user/month. Plus $15/user/month plus a platform fee by team size (~20% off annual). Cards require approval. No invented rewards rate here — confirm ramp.com/pricing.

Ramp official pricing, reviewed September 20, 2026.

Skip if

You cannot get approved, or you only needed one founder charge card at a branch. Ramp is a spend platform.

Why it ranks

  • Unlimited virtual cards on Free are the startup job: one vendor, one card, one lockout.
  • Receipt matching and QBO/Xero sit on the same login.
  • Bill pay next door so AP is not a second religion.
  • Ranks first on our expense-management list for the same reason.

Watch-outs

  • Approval is not guaranteed. $0 software is not a limit.
  • Plus has a platform fee on top of $15/user.
  • Partner-bank disclosures apply. We are not the issuer.
  • Do not buy Plus to look like a Series B finance desk.

02

Brex

Startups that want cards plus a $0 business account in one brand

8.1 / 10

Public pricing: Business account $0 on the public card. Software $0/user starter; Premium $12/user/month; Enterprise quote. Cards require approval. Confirm brex.com/pricing.

Brex pricing and fee schedule, reviewed September 20, 2026.

Skip if

You only needed checking (Mercury is calmer) or you already run Ramp and only wanted reimbursements.

Why it ranks

  • Virtual cards and the operating account can share a login.
  • Published $0 domestic wires/ACH/checks on the fee schedule we reviewed.
  • Controls scale when you suddenly have ten cardholders.
  • See Is Brex worth it for startups if the account is half the buy.

Watch-outs

  • Eligibility is real. Seed-stage does not mean approved.
  • Premium is a software bill.
  • Not the calmest product for a one-founder sole prop.
  • We are not your underwriter.

03

Mercury

Companies that already bank at Mercury and want debit / spend cards without a second platform

7.6 / 10

Public pricing: Standard checking $0 monthly. Paid software from $35/month for extra workflows. Debit and spend products sit on the account — confirm mercury.com/pricing. Not a credit line.

Mercury pricing and banking pages, reviewed September 20, 2026. Fintech; partner banks hold deposits.

Skip if

You need credit float or policy controls as the product. Ramp is the spend platform. Mercury is an account.

Why it ranks

  • One admin for cash and cards if you already picked Mercury.
  • No second underwriting conversation if the account is open.
  • Free USD wires on the published banking page — the account is the product.
  • Fine as the first founder card before a spend platform.

Watch-outs

  • Debit is not credit. A large vendor bill can bounce.
  • Not a policy engine in the Ramp sense.
  • Cash deposits are not the product.
  • Restricted industries apply. Read eligibility.

04

American Express Business

Founders who want a traditional charge or credit card and will actually pay it

7.4 / 10

Public pricing: Annual fees vary by product (Blue Business, Gold, Platinum Business, and others). We will not freeze a rotating welcome bonus. Confirm americanexpress.com/us/credit-cards/business/.

American Express Business card pages, reviewed September 20, 2026.

Skip if

You needed virtual cards and lockouts for a 15-person team. Amex is an issuer, not a spend OS.

Why it ranks

  • A business-named card vendors already recognize.
  • Charge-card float if you will pay in full — still credit risk.
  • Useful when a landlord or ad platform wants a traditional network.
  • Sits on the startup credit-cards ranking for rewards shoppers.

Watch-outs

  • Annual fees are easy to ignore and hard to cancel later.
  • One plastic is not a card program.
  • Personal guarantees are common. Read the terms.
  • This is not a card offer.

How we picked

The job is issuing cards a startup will actually control. We scored published software fees, whether the product is a spend platform vs an issuer, and whether a founder can finish setup. Chase Ink lives on the credit-cards ranking. Expensify lives on expense management. We do not invent rewards rates.
