Best POS software for food trucks (2026)

Take a tap on a generator. A five-year restaurant contract is how you finance a dining room you do not have.

A food-truck POS has one job: take a card on bad wifi, print or shout a ticket, and get the money into a business account. Hardware that dies in the sun is a furniture problem. A restaurant suite for a window is how you pay for online ordering you will run from a phone anyway.

Square is the default. Toast wins only if you will live in that platform and have a written quote. Clover is a processor relationship. Shopify POS wins if the brand already lives on Shopify.

Software stickers lie. Square Free is $0/month and still charges 2.6% + 15¢ in person as of September 20, 2026. Confirm the live payments page before you finance a terminal. This is not a processing contract review.

Square

Most US trucks that want to take taps this week without a restaurant contract

8.7 / 10

Public pricing: Square Free $0/month software; in-person 2.6% + 15¢; online/invoices 3.3% + 30¢. Plus $49/month per location (in-person 2.5% + 15¢). Premium $149/month. Hardware extra. Custom processing if you clear $250k+/year.

You already live in Shopify for merch and need the same catalog at the window. Or you are becoming a restaurant and will sign a Toast quote on purpose.

Why it ranks

  • A phone or a $cheap reader before the next event. That is the truck job.
  • Free software is real. You pay processing until Plus is obviously worth it.
  • Square Payroll ($35 + $6) sits next door if the window becomes a crew.
  • Offline-ish tap behavior and a known support path when the generator flickers.

Watch-outs

  • Online/invoice rates on Free are worse than in-person.
  • Plus and Premium are per location. A second truck can become a second bill.
  • Hardware is not free. Budget a stand that will not slide off the sill.
  • Payout timing and holds are Square’s. Read the seller agreement.

02

Toast

Trucks that are already a Toast restaurant or will become one and have a written quote

7.6 / 10

Public pricing: Quote-based software plus hardware plus processing. Toast does not publish a single national self-serve truck rate card. Get the effective rate in writing next to hardware.

You are a single window and wanted a tap this Saturday. Buying Toast to get a food-truck POS is how you finance a restaurant platform.

Why it ranks

  • Kitchen tickets and a restaurant labor story if you also have a dining room.
  • Useful when the brick-and-mortar is already Toast and the truck should share a menu.
  • Payroll can sit in-family — still a quote.
  • A hiring-market brand for managers.

Watch-outs

  • The contract and hardware bundle can outlive the lease on the commissary.
  • You cannot compare Toast to Square Free without a quote.
  • Switching later is a renovation.
  • Overkill for a weekend-only window.

03

Clover

Operators whose processor or bank already standardized on Clover

7.4 / 10

Public pricing: Hardware and software plans vary by reseller. Processing is the bill. Confirm clover.com and the written merchant agreement — we will not freeze a stale terminal sticker.

You wanted published $0 software this week. Clover is often a hardware-plus-processing conversation.

Why it ranks

  • A station that looks like a register when events require it.
  • Useful when the merchant account is the relationship.
  • App market exists if you will actually install something.
  • A known alternative when Square holds are the reason you left.

Watch-outs

  • Reseller quotes hide the effective rate. Get it in writing.
  • Hardware lock-in is real.
  • Not the fastest path to a Saturday farmers’ market.
  • Payroll is not why Clover ranks here.

04

Shopify POS

Trucks whose merch and mail-order already live on Shopify

7.3 / 10

Public pricing: POS Lite is included with paid Shopify plans; public Basic-class plans start at $39/month. POS Pro is +$89/month per location on Shopify’s public card. Basic in-person Shopify Payments commonly 2.6% + 10¢. Confirm shopify.com/pos/pricing.

You do not have (and do not want) a Shopify store. Buying Shopify just to get a window usually costs more than Square Free.

Why it ranks

  • One catalog for hoodies and tacos if merch is a real SKU.
  • POS Lite is enough for casual in-person if the website is the business.
  • Published plan rates beat a sealed restaurant quote.
  • Useful for a brand that started as a website and added a window.

Watch-outs

  • You are buying a commerce subscription plus, often, POS Pro.
  • A taco truck with no merch site does not need this.
  • Third-party processors add a Shopify fee.
  • Kitchen tickets are not why Shopify exists.

How we picked

The job is a US food-truck tap: published processing, hardware you can replace, and a skip-if for restaurant contracts. We scored Square’s public card first. Retail POS is the sibling if you are not food. Restaurant payroll is the sibling if tips and a crew are the leak.
