Pirate Ship vs ShipStation (2026)

Stay on Pirate Ship until a second store or a second person is missing orders. The $14.99 sticker is not a volume promise.

Short answer

Pirate Ship if you print labels and you are the only person doing it. The software fee on the homepage is zero. You pay postage. ShipStation if orders from more than one store need a queue and more than one login. Starter displayed at $14.99 a month with three users on September 22, 2026, and the page also says you can change a shipping volume tier. Do not treat $14.99 as “unlimited labels, any size brand.” Postage is extra on both. Neither one files sales tax.

The shipping ranking includes Shippo and Shopify Shipping, which are the other honest forks. Ecommerce accounting is what happens after the label.

The cards as of September 22, 2026

Pirate Ship: no monthly fee and no payment fee, stated on the site. USPS and UPS rate shopping, presets, batch labels, tracking, and chat or email support. We will not publish a sample Priority Mail price. Weight and zone decide that, and the rate moves.

ShipStation Starter: $14.99 a month, three users, unlimited store connections on that card, return labels, basic automations, email support. Standard adds phone support and a longer feature list; its dollar sticker did not render on our load. Premium is warehouse language and a dedicated implementation. Add-ons for fulfillment, 3PL, and dropship are separate fees. A 30-day trial and a 90-day satisfaction refund are advertised. Accounts registered before July 8, 2025 may still pay to connect their own carrier accounts. New plans, the page says, do not.

  • One person, one channel, a few dozen labels: Pirate Ship at $0 plus postage. ShipStation’s $14.99 is rent.
  • Two people printing: ShipStation’s three included users are the point. Pirate Ship does not become a team queue because you share a password.
  • Shopify-only, already paying for the store: buy the label in Shopify before you add either tool. Our last Basic-class read was $39 on September 21. Confirm your plan.
  • A heavy or cubic box: price that one shipment in Pirate Ship and in ShipStation before you standardize. The platform fee is not the postage.

When to leave Pirate Ship

  • You are copying orders out of Shopify and Etsy by hand, and one of them shipped late. That is the migration, not a feature comparison.
  • A second person packs. They need a login and a status, not your laptop.
  • Returns are an email thread. ShipStation’s return labels and, on higher plans, a returns portal are the paid features. Confirm which plan has the portal you mean.
  • You are about to buy “advanced inventory” and forecasting. That is Premium’s neighborhood. A small brand usually needs the inventory ranking, not a shipping implementation.

Shippo is the step between them

Shippo Starter is free up to 30 labels a month, with store connections and one user. Pro starts at $19 a month, or $205 a year for the entry band in Shippo’s plan overview, then $29, $54, $79, $139, and $199 as volume climbs. Your own carrier account is 5¢ a label on Starter and included on Pro. If Pirate Ship’s missing store sync is the only pain, try Shippo’s free 30 before you pay ShipStation. If you are already over 200 labels and you need three users, then put ShipStation’s tier next to Shippo’s $29 band and compare postage on the same box.

What neither tool does

They do not close the month. Shopify payouts, Etsy fees, and postage spent are a ledger problem. Best accounting software for ecommerce and the Etsy bookkeeping page are that job. They also do not register you for sales tax. A label can show tax you collected. It cannot tell you whether you should have collected it. We are not your CPA. An AI delivery estimate on either marketing site is not a reason to switch.
