Best sales tax software for small ecommerce (2026)

A checkout that charges the right rate is not a filing calendar. Pick the layer that matches where the orders already live.

By Gregory GreensteinUpdated September 20, 2026Affiliate disclosure

Small-seller sales tax fails in two different places: the rate at checkout, and the return somebody has to file after you register. A spreadsheet of “I think we owe Texas” is neither. This page is for US ecommerce and digital sellers under ~50 people who already have a store or a Stripe account and need a tax engine — not a new shopping cart.

Stripe Tax wins when the charge already happens on Stripe. TaxJar wins when orders land in several channels and you want a published AutoFile on-ramp. Quaderno wins for a low-volume digital product with invoices and threshold alerts. Avalara is the heavier engine, with a published floor that is a different budget.

Ecommerce accounting is the ledger sibling. Shipping software is the label sibling. The seller ops stack is the rest of the pile. We will not tell you where you have nexus. Registration, marketplace facilitator rules, and what is taxable are for a CPA or a sales-tax specialist. This is not tax advice.

01

Stripe Tax

Sellers who already charge on Stripe Checkout, Billing, Invoicing, or Payment Links

8.5 / 10

Public pricing: Tax Basic: 0.5% per transaction where you are registered, on Billing, Checkout, Invoicing, and Payment Links. Transactions created through payment APIs or another processor are 50¢ each (10 calculation calls included, then 5¢ per extra call). Tax Complete is a 1-year contract: $90, $430, $1,000, or $1,500 per month by registration, transaction, and filing caps. The $90 tier lists 2 registrations, 200 transactions, and 4 filings a year.

Most of your orders are on Amazon, Etsy, or a cart Stripe never sees. TaxJar or Quaderno can ingest those channels. Or you need a filing desk in many states and will not sign Tax Complete’s annual contract — read that card before you assume 0.5% includes returns.

Why it ranks

  • If checkout is already Stripe, calculation is a setting, not a second integration project.
  • Tax Basic is a percentage you can model on last month’s taxable sales.
  • Tax Complete is where registrations and filings show up. The page says US filing can run through TaxJar in select states.
  • Obligation monitoring is on both plans. An alert is not a decision to register.

Watch-outs

  • 0.5% is only where you are already registered to collect. It does not decide nexus for you.
  • The 50¢ API price is a different product surface than the 0.5% Checkout price. Read which one you will actually call.
  • Tax Complete’s cheapest published tier is $90/month on a one-year contract. That is not “pennies per order.”
  • Paying TaxJar separately for the same filing is how this bill doubles. Appoint one filer.

02

TaxJar

Multi-channel US sellers who want reporting and a published AutoFile credit count

8.3 / 10

Public pricing: At the 200-order tier on the public slider: Starter $39/month (up to 3 data-import integrations, 2 AutoFile credits a year, extra credits $50). Professional $99/month (up to 10 integrations, API, 4 AutoFile credits, extra credits $55). Annual saves 10% or more. Higher order volume moves the price. 30-day trial.

TaxJar pricing (taxjar.com/pricing), reviewed September 23, 2026. Figures are the 200-order tier, not every slider stop.

Every taxable order already runs through Stripe and you only need calculation. Start with Stripe Tax Basic. Or your volume is a handful of invoices a month — Quaderno Hobby may be the smaller tool.

Why it ranks

  • Shopify, Amazon, and CSV imports are the job when Stripe is not the only register.
  • A published starter price. You can see AutoFile credits before a sales call.
  • Nexus dashboards and reports are what a bookkeeper actually opens.
  • Professional is where the API and phone support show up. Starter is reporting and a thin filing allotment.

Watch-outs

  • Two AutoFile credits do not cover a monthly return in one state, let alone ten. Model extra credits at $50 or $55.
  • The $39 and $99 figures are the 200-order tier. A holiday month uses flex fees. Read that section.
  • Stripe owns the relationship with TaxJar filing inside Tax Complete. Do not assume the products are interchangeable.
  • Calculation without registration is theater. The tool will not enroll you with a state.

03

Quaderno

Digital sellers and small subscription businesses that also need tax invoices

7.9 / 10

Public pricing: Hobby $24/month (25 transactions, 1 user, 1 jurisdiction, 1 integration). Startup $41 (250 transactions). Business $83 (1,000). Growth $124 (2,500). Enterprise is contact-only. Exceeding the cap upgrades you to the next tier. 7-day trial. Filing and registration are offered; the page does not print those fees.

Quaderno pricing (quaderno.io/pricing), reviewed September 23, 2026.

You are a high-volume physical Shopify brand. Transaction caps will push you up the ladder fast. Or you want US AutoFile credits itemized the way TaxJar itemizes them — Quaderno’s filing offer is a conversation, not a $55 credit on the card.

Why it ranks

  • Flat monthly math. A 250-transaction digital shop can see $41 without a seat tax.
  • Invoices, threshold alerts, and calculations in one place match how indie products actually sell.
  • Unlimited jurisdictions on every plan above Hobby. You are not paying per state for the alert.
  • A defined alternative when Stripe Tax’s API pricing is the wrong shape.

Watch-outs

  • Hobby’s one jurisdiction is a demo, not a US seller with two states.
  • Auto-upgrade on volume is kinder than overage, and it is still a surprise if you do not watch the meter.
  • Filing fees are not on the public card. Get them in writing before you cancel a TaxJar plan.
  • Not a general ledger. Your CPA still wants QBO, Xero, or Wave.

04

Avalara AvaTax

Sellers whose accountant already named AvaTax, or who file in enough states that a per-state plan is the point

7.4 / 10

Public pricing: AvaTax plans start at $699 per state, per year on the public product page. Transaction volume scales the bill. The page says there are no per-jurisdiction surcharges on top of that structure, and that qualifying businesses may use state-funded SST compliance in up to 25 states. Returns are a separate Avalara product. We do not print a fake national SMB rate.

Avalara AvaTax page (avalara.com AvaTax product), reviewed September 23, 2026. Only the $699 per state per year floor is published as a starting plan.

Skip if

You have one Shopify store and two states. A $699-per-state floor is the wrong first tool. Use Stripe Tax, TaxJar, or Quaderno until a specialist tells you otherwise.

Why it ranks

  • The integration list is why controllers ask for it: Shopify, QuickBooks, NetSuite, and a long tail.
  • A published floor, even when the rest is a quote. That is more honest than a blog’s old $19 screenshot.
  • Exemption certificates, returns, and item classification exist as named add-ons. You can see the pile.
  • The right skip-if for a brand that has outgrown a slider and has someone who will operate it.

Watch-outs

  • $699 per state per year is the start. Ten states is a five-figure conversation before transactions.
  • Self-serve setup is still measured in days to weeks on their own FAQ. This is not a Tuesday-night toggle.
  • Managed returns are extra. Calculation alone does not remit.
  • Do not buy it because the homepage says AI. The job is a rate and a return.

How we picked

The job is a US online seller who may already have crossed economic-nexus thresholds: calculate tax where they are registered, keep a report a CPA can file from, and show the price before the contract. We scored channel fit, whether filing is included or a second SKU, and whether a founder can read the card. Vertex and enterprise tax departments stay off. Rank is not for sale.

September 23 napkin for a Stripe-only shop doing $40,000 a month in states where it is already registered: Tax Basic at 0.5% is about $200 if every dollar is taxable on Checkout. TaxJar Professional at the 200-order tier is $99 before extra AutoFile credits. Quaderno Startup is $41 until you pass 250 transactions. Avalara at $699 per state is a different year. Marketplace sales may already be collected by the marketplace. Do not pay a tool to “fix” tax a facilitator already remits — confirm that with your CPA, not with us.

Who should skip this page

  • You only sell on a marketplace that is the facilitator in your states, and your CPA has said you have nothing to file. Software will not improve that.
  • You need a bookkeeping close. Ecommerce accounting is the other page.
  • You need shipping labels. That ranking is separate.
  • You want a legal opinion on nexus, exemptions, or digital goods. Hire that. Then buy a tool.
