Best business checking accounts for startups (2026)

A startup needs a business-named account, cards, and wires before the first SAFE. Not a branch tour, and not a personal checking workaround.

By Gregory GreensteinUpdated September 20, 2026Affiliate disclosure

Startup checking is the LLC banking job with a bias toward wires, investor ops, and $0 monthly fees. If you need cash deposits and a branch, read the LLC banking ranking and look at Chase. This page is for US C-corps, LLCs, and “we just incorporated” teams under ~50.

Several products are fintech apps that partner with banks. They are not themselves the FDIC. Insurance, if any, is through partner banks under those banks’ terms. We are not a bank. This is not a deposit advertisement.

Public fee pages as of September 20, 2026. Mercury and Brex advertise $0 core checking. Relay’s Starter is $0 with paid tiers. Found is built for solopreneurs more than priced rounds.

01

Mercury

Incorporated startups that want $0 checking, free USD wires, and a modern admin

8.5 / 10

Public pricing: Standard business checking and savings: no required monthly fee. Paid software plans start at $35/month for advanced workflows.

Mercury pricing (mercury.com/pricing), reviewed September 20, 2026. Mercury is a fintech; banking services via partner banks.

Skip if

You deposit cash weekly or need a neighborhood branch. Mercury is not that bank.

Why it ranks

  • Free domestic and USD international wires on the published banking page matter once you pay contractors and counsel.
  • Multiple accounts and a clean admin for two founders plus a bookkeeper.
  • Known path for venture-backed and bootstrapped US companies.
  • Optional paid plan is not required to hold operating cash.

Watch-outs

  • Eligibility and industry restrictions apply. Read them before you apply.
  • Not a cash business product.
  • Treasury / APY is a different decision than operating checking.
  • A 2026 charter conversation does not replace today’s partner-bank disclosures.

02

Relay

Operators who will actually use sub-accounts for tax, payroll, and runway

8.2 / 10

Public pricing: Starter $0/month with published caps on accounts and cards. Grow and Scale are paid (publicly described around $30 and $120/month). Confirm relayfi.com.

Relay public plans, reviewed September 20, 2026. Deposits via partner bank.

Skip if

You want one checking account and will never open the extras. Relay is envelope budgeting as a bank admin.

Why it ranks

  • Sub-accounts are how startups stop raiding the tax bucket for ads.
  • Debit cards per bucket make “who spent that” shorter.
  • Starter is enough until approvals matter.
  • Pairs well with Gusto debiting a dedicated payroll account.

Watch-outs

  • Unused sub-accounts are not a strategy.
  • Paid tiers exist for a reason.
  • Same fintech-plus-partner-bank model.
  • Not a branch.

03

Brex

Startups that want cards, spend controls, and a $0 business account in one vendor

7.9 / 10

Public pricing: Business account: $0 monthly on the public card; Brex publishes $0 for domestic wires, ACH, and checks on its fee schedule. Software: $0/user on the starter software tier; Premium $12/user/month; Enterprise quote. Card rewards and limits are not a deposit rate.

Brex pricing and “cost of Brex services” (brex.com/pricing, brex.com/support/cost-of-brex-services), reviewed September 20, 2026.

Skip if

You only need a checking account and hate applying for a card program. Brex is a spend platform that includes an account — eligibility is real.

Why it ranks

  • Founders who already want virtual cards and limits get the account “free” on the published software tier.
  • Wires and ACH at $0 on the published schedule matter for counsel and payroll.
  • Useful when finance is one person and the card is the expense policy.
  • FDIC via partner banks is disclosed on Brex’s own materials — read them.

Watch-outs

  • You have to be approved. “$0” is not “you get a limit.”
  • Premium at $12/user is a software bill on top of the account.
  • Not the calmest product for a sole proprietor who just needs an EIN account.
  • We are not your underwriter.

04

Found

Solo founders and pre-team operators who want banking plus light bookkeeping in one app

7.4 / 10

Public pricing: Found markets a $0 business banking app for self-employed operators; paid tax-help or bookkeeping extras may appear on the live site. Confirm found.com. Partner-bank model.

Found official site (found.com), reviewed September 20, 2026. Confirm current fee schedule in-app.

Skip if

You raised a round and need multi-user admin, free wires at volume, and a bookkeeper in QBO. Found is a solopreneur product.

Why it ranks

  • Lower ceremony than Mercury if you are still a one-person Inc.
  • Invoices and estimated-tax adjacent tools sit next to the balance — still not tax advice.
  • Useful as a first separation from personal checking.
  • A path, not a forever treasury.

Watch-outs

  • Team and investor ops will outgrow it.
  • Export before you graduate to Mercury or a ledger.
  • “Tax” features are software, not a CPA.
  • Same insurance-via-partners rule as the rest of this list.

How we picked

The job is US startup operating cash: $0 monthly if possible, wires, cards, and admin a founder can finish. We scored fee honesty, partner-bank disclosure, and whether the product survives the first hire. Chase and Bluevine live on the LLC ranking. Novo is a fine extra; we kept this list to four.
