Rippling vs Gusto in 2026
Gusto wins when payday and benefits are the job and you want a napkin bill. Rippling wins when HR, IT, and payroll must share one employee record.

Verdict
Pick Gusto if you are hiring the first employees, need US tax filing, and want a published monthly number. Pick Rippling if laptops, app access, and the org chart are already a weekly fire — and you have a written quote. Do not pick Rippling because a Slack thread said “it’s the system of record.” Do not pick Gusto Premium to impersonate an HRIS.
Public pricing as of September 20, 2026
Gusto publishes Simple at $49 per month plus $6 per person, Plus at $80 plus $12, and Premium at $180 plus $22. Contractor Only is $35 plus $6. Simple is single-state. Confirm gusto.com/product/pricing.
Rippling does not publish a durable national rate card. Materials have described HRIS and payroll around $8 PEPM each, sometimes with a platform fee. That is not your number. Treat the live quote as the price. Comparing a blog PEPM to Gusto Simple is how you make a bad board slide.
- Ten people, one state, Gusto Simple: $49 + $60 = $109/month.
- Ten people, Gusto Plus (multi-state): $80 + $120 = $200/month.
- Ten people, Rippling: unknown until modules and implementation land on paper.
Two jobs
Gusto is payroll and the first-hire desk: onboarding forms, benefits next to payday, 1099s. That is why it ranks first on our small-business payroll and startup HR lists. It is not a device-management platform.
Rippling’s product is the employee record. Payroll is a module. So are benefits, apps, and devices. The week you provision a laptop and a dozen SaaS seats by hand, Rippling starts to make sense. The week you only need payday, it is overkill.
Who should pick which
- First hire, one state: Gusto Simple.
- Multi-state W-2s, still no IT pain: Gusto Plus.
- IT and HR report to the same founder: get a Rippling quote.
- You already standardized on QuickBooks Workforce: that is a different comparison.
- You want a PEO: Justworks, not this fork.
Switching later is possible and unpleasant. If you are six months from a second state or a real IT function, choose the product that still fits after that change. We are not your implementer, and this is not tax advice.
