Gusto vs Rippling for payroll in 2026

Gusto wins when payday and filings are the job and you want a napkin. Rippling payroll wins when you already need the employee record for apps and devices — and you have a written module quote.

Verdict

Pick Gusto if the job is US tax filings, a first-hire desk, and a published monthly number. Pick Rippling’s payroll module if you are already buying Rippling for HR and IT — do not buy Rippling to get payday alone. Do not pick Gusto Premium to impersonate an HRIS. Do not pick Rippling payroll because a blog PEPM looked cheaper than Gusto Simple.

This is the payroll-only companion to Rippling vs Gusto. That page is the system-of-record fork (devices, apps, org chart). This page is withhold, file, and whether the bill is a napkin. If IT is not a weekly fire, leave Rippling on the table.

Public pricing as of September 20, 2026

Gusto: Simple $49 + $6 per person, Plus $80 + $12, Premium $180 + $22, Contractor Only $35 + $6. Simple is single-state. Unlimited payroll runs sit on the standard employee plans. Confirm gusto.com/product/pricing.

Rippling: no durable national self-serve rate card. Materials have described HRIS and payroll around $8 PEPM each, sometimes with a platform fee. That is not your number. Treat the live quote — payroll module, platform, implementation — as the price. Comparing a blog PEPM to Gusto Simple is how you make a bad board slide.

  • Ten people, one state, Gusto Simple: $49 + $60 = $109/month.
  • Ten people, two states, Gusto Plus: $80 + $120 = $200/month.
  • Ten contractors only, Gusto: $35 + $60 = $95/month.
  • Ten people, Rippling payroll: unknown until modules and implementation land on paper.

Payroll module vs payroll product

Gusto’s job is payday: withhold, deposit, file, W-2s, 1099s, benefits next door. Multi-state is a plan conversation (Plus). Off-cycle and garnishments are included on the standard employee story they advertise. Setup is a Tuesday night for a practice manager or founder.

Rippling’s job is the employee record. Payroll is one module next to devices, app access, and the org chart. That is why it can win when IT and HR report to the same founder — see the companion page. It is why it loses when the only leak is Friday’s debit. Implementation is a project. OnPay is the published multi-state SKU if that is the whole comparison. Square Payroll is the register fork.

Who should pick which

  • First hire, one state, want a napkin: Gusto Simple.
  • Multi-state W-2s, still no IT pain: Gusto Plus — or OnPay’s included filings. See Gusto vs OnPay.
  • Already buying Rippling for laptops and SaaS: add payroll on the same quote.
  • IT is not a fire and you do not have a Rippling quote: do not start one for payday.
  • Register is Square: Square Payroll may beat both. See Gusto vs Square Payroll.
  • CPA/broker on Paychex or ADP: get a quote. See Paychex vs ADP.
  • You need a PEO: Justworks, not this fork.

Switching later is possible and unpleasant. Do not switch mid-quarter. We are not your implementer, and this is not tax advice.
