Is Wave accounting worth it in 2026?

Wave is worth it when you will actually reconcile a starter file. It is not worth it as a forever ledger once a US CPA asks for QuickBooks.

Short answer

Yes — for a new US freelancer or single-member LLC that will categorize weekly and send invoices without paying Intuit yet. No — if you will not open it, if a bookkeeper only works in QBO/Xero, or if you think “free” means card processing is free.

The September 20, 2026 math

Starter invoicing and basic books are $0. Pro is $19/month or $190/year. Card payments use Wave’s published processing rates (commonly cited around 2.9% + $0.60 — confirm live). Confirm waveapps.com/pricing.

  • Twelve months of Starter: $0 software, plus processing on cards.
  • Pro for a year: $190 if you prepay.
  • A $10,000 card invoice can cost more than years of FreshBooks Plus. Offer ACH.
  • QBO Simple Start is $38/month list when you graduate.

When it is worth it

You are in year one, you will snap receipts, and you do not have a CPA demanding a file yet. Wave ranks on our invoicing, bookkeeping, and receipt pages for that reason. The writer stack still starts here.

When it is not

First W-2 and a CPA. Inventory. Multi-currency. Clients who need a FreshBooks-grade portal. You have ignored the bank feed since March. A free ledger you abandon is not bookkeeping.

Alternatives

  • FreshBooks — clients and reminders.
  • QuickBooks or Xero — the CPA’s file.
  • Bench — you will not categorize.
