Is Novo banking worth it in 2026?

Novo is worth it when you want simple $0 monthly checking and will not miss wires or envelopes. It is not worth it if you deposit cash or want a treasury desk.

Short answer

Yes — for a straightforward US LLC or freelancer that needs a business-named account, Stripe and client ACH, and $0 monthly maintenance without a branch tour. No — if you deposit cash, send international wires as a weekly habit, want twenty sub-accounts, or will not pass eligibility. Novo is a financial technology company. Banking services are provided by partner banks. We are not the FDIC.

This page is checking, not a card program. Mercury is the richer $0 admin. Relay is envelopes. Found is the solopreneur app. Bluevine leads with yield. Chase is the branch. Novo sits on our LLC banking ranking as the low-drama middle.

The September 20, 2026 fees

Novo advertises no monthly fees on business checking. Some extras — expedited ACH, certain integrations — can carry fees. Confirm novo.co and the live fee schedule. You are not forced into a paid software SKU to hold operating cash the way some Mercury workflows are packaged.

  • Twelve months of advertised checking: $0 maintenance on the published story.
  • Expedited ACH or extras: confirm the live menu — do not assume every transfer is free.
  • Mercury standard checking: also $0; paid software from $35 if you need the extra workflows.
  • Relay Starter: $0 with a cap on accounts and cards; Grow around $30.
  • Chase Business Complete: monthly fee unless you hit the waiver. Confirm chase.com.

When Novo is worth it

  • You just formed an LLC and need a business-named home for Stripe and invoices.
  • You want $0 monthly maintenance and will not pretend APY is the product.
  • You do not need Mercury-class wires or Relay-class envelopes this year.
  • Onboarding faster than a branch appointment is the actual requirement.
  • Gusto or Square Payroll needs a real business account — not the owner’s checking.

When Novo is not worth it

  • You deposit cash weekly. That is a branch job — see Chase on the LLC ranking.
  • You will envelope-budget with twenty sub-accounts. That is Relay.
  • You send USD international wires as a habit. Mercury’s published wire page is the other napkin.
  • You are a solopreneur who wants bookkeeping in the same app. That is Found.
  • Your industry is restricted. Read eligibility before you apply.
  • You are still mixing rent and invoices in a personal account and will not finish the application.

Honest alternatives

Mercury if wires and a two-founder admin are the job. Relay if you will actually open tax, payroll, and operating buckets. Found if you are self-employed and want the banking-plus-books story. Bluevine if yield is the decision driver and you will read the activity rules. Chase if a lender or cash requires a branch. See Is Mercury worth it and Is Found worth it if you are arguing in a partner meeting.

What we will not recommend: running the company on Venmo, opening four fintechs because a thread listed a stack, or chasing APY with Friday’s payroll. Appoint one operating account.
