Is Bench worth it vs DIY bookkeeping? (2026)
Bench is worth it when you will not categorize. DIY is worth it when you will. $199/month is a luxury shoebox for two invoices.

Verdict
Pick DIY (Wave $0 or QBO Simple Start $38) if you will open the file weekly and your volume is still a human-scale bank feed. Pick Bench if you have real volume, have proven you will not categorize, and want a human team to produce monthly books. This is complementary to Is Bench accounting worth it — that page is the product skip-if. This page is Bench versus you.
The September 21, 2026 math
Bench: bookkeeping from $199/month; Core from $399; Core + Tax from $599. Annual marketed at about 20% off ($1,910 / $3,830 / $5,750-class figures on the page we have reviewed). Catch-up and QBO support can be extra. Confirm bench.co/pricing.
DIY: Wave $0 or Pro $19. QBO Simple Start $38, Essentials $85, Plus $140. A local bookkeeper may be cheaper than $199 if you have one. Twelve months of Bench Grow-class is $2,388 monthly or ~$1,910 annual vs $456 of QBO Simple Start or $0 of Wave — plus your Sundays.
When DIY wins
- You already reconcile. Buying Bench is paying someone to do a habit you have.
- Two invoices a month. See side-hustle bookkeeping.
- A CPA will open Wave or QBO if you keep it clean.
- You are still mixing accounts. Bench will not unmix Venmo. See banking mistakes.
- You think Bench is “AI that does taxes.” It is a human service. AI bots stay on Aiacent.
When Bench wins
- The file has been open zero times this quarter and April is coming.
- Payouts (ecommerce, STR) are a lump you will not map. A human plus a ledger beats a dead Wave.
- Your time is more expensive than $199 and you will stay out of the file.
- You want monthly statements you will actually send to a CPA.
The middle
A local bookkeeper on your QBO at a quoted hourly or monthly can beat Bench and keep the file in a tool you own. Catch-up month on Bench, then DIY, is a valid on-ramp — if you will not relapse. Do not stack Bench and a second bookkeeper. Appoint one closer of the books.
