Is QuickBooks Online worth it in 2026?

QuickBooks is worth it when a US CPA will touch the file. It is not worth it as an expensive invoicing app.

Short answer

Yes, for a US LLC or freelancer who has (or will have) an accountant, employees, sales tax, or any chance of a real close. Simple Start at a published $38 per month is the price of a file most US CPAs already know how to open. No, if you send a few invoices a year and can live on Wave, or if your bookkeeper is a Xero shop and will charge you to recast a QuickBooks file.

The 2026 price, without the brochure

Intuit’s public pricing page lists Simple Start at $38, Essentials at $85, Plus at $140, and Advanced at $340 per month. A 50% off three-month intro is the usual storefront. Intuit’s own 2026 note said Essentials, Plus, and Advanced renewals on or after August 1, 2026 moved to those higher list prices; Simple Start was described as unchanged. Your bill is still whatever is on your renewal email.

Workforce payroll is extra ($50 + $7 per employee on the entry plan). Payments take processing fees. Live bookkeeping and “expert assisted” add-ons are extra. The number people argue about online is rarely the number on the card.

When QuickBooks Online is worth it

  • A CPA or bookkeeper already works in QuickBooks.
  • You will hire and want payroll journals in the same vendor family.
  • You collect sales tax or issue 1099s and want that in the file, not in a side spreadsheet.
  • You need more than one user and are willing to pay Essentials or Plus for seats.
  • You tried Wave and the books outgrew “good enough.”

When it is not worth it

  • You only need to send invoices. FreshBooks or Wave will hurt less.
  • Your accountant said Xero. Listen.
  • You are buying Advanced because the comparison chart looked grown-up. Most shops under 50 do not need it.
  • You will not log in. Software you ignore is a donation.
  • You want an AI that “does your taxes.” That is not what this product is, and it is not what Incacent ranks.

Which plan to actually buy

Simple Start if you are one person invoicing and reconciling. Essentials if a bookkeeper needs a login or you bill bills and need more users. Plus if you have inventory or project tracking as a real job. Advanced if you have a controller and 25 users — at that point you should not be shopping from a freelancer blog.

Self-Employed is a different Intuit product. Only buy it if the person who files your return wants that product. Do not buy it because it is cheaper and then ask a QBO-only CPA to clean it up.
